About Us

The Roti Prata House

Here’s our tempting look of “Crispy Roti Prata”, the irresistibly flaky, crispy flatbread beloved across Singapore (and Southeast Asia).

The term comes from Hindi — roti meaning “bread” — and the Malay adaptation of paratha (“flat”). It is rooted in Indian traditions but has been uniquely localized in Singapore.

"CRISPY PRATA'S"

Culinary Heritage: My grandfather Janab Late S.S. Mohamed Ali, an Indian migrant Singapore citizen, an Indian Muslim hawker, who has the pride of introducing roti prata in his own kopitiam in the very early years of independent Singapore.

From my grandfather, my father Mr. Ikbal (son of S.S. Mohamed Ali) learned all the secrets and opened a Prata Stall in Ghim Moh Estate, which was very successful in those years from 1980’s. In the year 1991, we moved from Ghim Moh and relocated to Casuarina Road, Upper Thomson. Here we opened a restaurant with the name Roti Prata House and introduced the newer version of prata — "THE CRISPY PRATA" — which was very successful, more than our expectations. And The New Paper stepped into our premises and published an article on our CRISPY PRATA  "as BEST CRISPY PRATA IN SINGAPORE", resulting in stunning response from all parts of Singapore. Really, a sudden surge in our customer base which was mind-boggling.

Due to space constraints and related issues, in July 1996 10th we relocated again to our newly constructed restaurant at 246M Upper Thomson Road (next to Post Office) — The Roti Prata House.

In the year 2004, my father Mr. Ikbal has expanded the restaurant to accommodate and dine double the space, due to the astounding customers year after year, and one of the main reasons being the location — the Upper Thomson main road, the Central Singapore, making it easy for everyone to reach and enjoy our crispy pratas.

In 2009, after I took over the business from my father Mr. Ikbal, I introduced 86 new varieties of crispy pratas as on date which has fetched overwhelming responses from all ages of customers, and we are planning to bring more varieties as we say:

"WE KNOW THE (SECRET) WAY TO REACH YOUR STOMACH IS THROUGH YOUR TASTE BUDS."

All in all, the reason for being successful in this venture is: “This is our family business” — striving for consistency in "The quality of foodstuff" we deliver to the Singaporeans & all.

The outcome of consistency is the trust & momentum which in turn takes us to reach the 50 years of milestone — soon.
